If you export any goods outside Egypt using wooden packaging — pallets, crates, or stringers — ISPM-15 is not optional. It is a legal requirement imposed by most countries worldwide, and ignoring it means your shipment could be detained at customs or returned at your expense.
What is ISPM-15?
ISPM-15 stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, an international standard developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It aims to prevent the spread of insects, pests, and plant diseases through wooden packaging materials used in international shipping.
Why was this standard created?
Before this standard was established, many countries suffered from the spread of destructive pests that arrived via raw wood packaging — most notably an Asian beetle that destroyed entire forests in North America and Europe. The standard was introduced as a global preventive measure.
Approved Treatment Methods
The standard specifies two main treatment methods:
1. Heat Treatment (HT)
The pallet is heated inside a specialized kiln until the core temperature of the wood reaches 56 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 30 continuous minutes. This heat eliminates all insects and larvae inside the wood, including eggs.
2. Methyl Bromide Fumigation (MB)
Although previously common, many countries have stopped accepting it due to environmental concerns. Heat treatment is now the approved method in most markets, including the European Union and North America.
Countries Requiring ISPM-15
Many countries around the world require the ISPM-15 standard to accept shipments. Therefore, it is always necessary to check the requirements of the importing country before shipping your goods, as most international destinations today only accept shipments using treated and stamped wood.
Does the Standard Apply to Compressed Wood?
No. Compressed wood (LVL) is exempt from ISPM-15 requirements because its manufacturing process, which involves high heat and pressure, automatically destroys any pests. This is an added advantage that makes compressed wood a preferred choice for exporters looking to avoid additional treatment procedures.
